As we plan our trip north to open camp, we have been diligently watching the ice conditions on Red Lake, talking to people in the area to gather information. The ice is anticipated to go out around May 14 this year. Because the lake’s water level is low at this time, there is less water to help break up that huge chunk of ice. This photo shows what Howey Bay looked like a couple of days ago.
We plan to arrive in Red Lake on May 10 and fly into camp soon after that so we can start waking up camp for our 2018 season. It will be interesting to see how the late ice-out affects the way the fish will be biting that first week and their location as the season progresses!
